Chime supporting Tinnitus Awareness Week 2-8 February 2015

Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the head and/or the ears which has no external source. It is not a disease or illness, it is a symptom generated within the auditory system. Noise can be low, medium or high pitched, it may come and go, and it may be a single noise or have two or more components.

Tinnitus can be associated with hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, stress and anxiety or ear infections.

The Chime Tinnitus Management Service offers a combination of therapeutic approaches, to support the process of habituation to tinnitus (the point at which we know it's there but we're just not hearing it most of the time).

Approaches include, sound enrichment, relaxation and stress management, counselling including the use of some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches; and Sleep Management.

Chime are also exploring the use of Mindfulness: a very current meditation approach being used widely in health care. Mindfulness is in its infancy in audiology and is just beginning to emerge as a management approach in departments - we hope to offer group courses in the near future.
