How to Turn Your Hearing Aids On and Off
Turing your hearing aid on and off is usually a simple process, but can vary depending on the type of hearing aid that you have. We've detailed three different methods to turn your hearing aid on and off that cover different models and charging methods.
Method 1: Using the Battery Cover
The most common method to turn on a traditional battery operated (non-rechargeable) hearing aid is by using the battery door.
To Turn On:
- Gently close the battery compartment fully without using any force. By doing this, it will power on the hearing aid.
- Listen for a start-up tone (if your hearing aid has one) or ensure it’s functioning properly. This may be some kind of audible beep or something similar that will indicate your hearing aid is on.
Turn Off:
- To turn the hearing aid off, do the opposite by partially or fully opening the battery compartment. This cuts off power to the device and turns it off.
- Leave the battery door open when not in use to preserve battery life and allow any built up mositure to evaporate.
Method 2: Using a Button or Switch
Many rechargeable hearing aids or more advanced models feature a dedicated button or switch for power control. This type of hearing aid is becoming more widely used, so this method of turning a hearing aid on and off is frequently used.
To Turn On:
- Somewhere on the device there will be a button or switch used to turn the device on and off. This is usually located on the back or side of the hearing aid.
- Once located, hold the button for a few seconds or slide the switch to the "On" position. This may be indicated by a symbol or small strip of colour.
- Listen for an audible tone or check the device's indicator light, which may turn green or flash. Either of these will confirm that the hearing aid has been turned on.
To Turn Off:
- To turn the hearing aid off, press and hold the button or move the switch to the "Off" position.
- Listen for an audible tone or see that the indicator light has turned off, confirming the hearing aid is off.
Method 3: Using a Charging Dock (for Rechargeable Hearing Aids)
The final method refers to rechargeable hearing aids. These often power on and off automatically when placed in or removed from the charger, eliminating the need to manually turn them on and off.
To Turn On:
- Remove the hearing aid charging dock by lifting it from its place. This should automatically turn the device on.
- Listen for an audible start-up tone to ensure that the device has turned on correctly.
To Turn Off:
- To turn the hearing aid off, place the hearing aid back into the charger. It will automatically turn off as it begins charging.
- Depending on the model of hearing aid you have, look for charging lights (typically red or blinking) to confirm it’s off and charging.
